Jaap, you tricked me into going back for a second-chance look at Quora. Including the feminism tag.

What a goddamned fucking worthless cesspool of self-important dumb THAT was. Is there some hidden part of the site where the actual feminists have interesting conversations?

I’m kind of sad that my Internet existence has been reduced to 140 character quips and reblogging pretty pictures, but all the prefab serious discussion forums seem terrible and I don’t have the energy to drive my own blog anymore.

I’ve had better luck with more “specialized” tags like “third-wave feminism”. But Quora is still far from a space that’s free of mansplaining.

Maybe it just needs a critical mass of feminists willing to ~~deliver righteous smackdowns~~ engage in a progressive dialectic? A “quorum” if you will?

Any open site needs a critical mass of smackdowns if it’s going to maintain reasonable feminist discourse. But assembling a critical mass while conforming to what appears to be an existing cultural expectation that one should treat questions like “why is telling someone to dress modestly different from telling people to lock their doors?” as though they are deserving of a serious answer rather than an insta-ban… what a hassle.

I’ve been enthused about delivering Feminist 101 smackdowns in the past and maybe I will feel that way again someday, but right now I’d rather amputate my own leg with a ballpoint pen.

Which sounds kind of fun and romantic at first, but let me tell you, it gets old quickly and moves on to creepy shortly after that.

One of my first memories of elementary school is of feeling super horrible about this song, because I got into the story enough to experience the guilt and shame of the good fairy’s reprimand, which only got worse as Bunny Foo-Foo inexplicably continued with the bad behavior. Then something awful happened to an adorable bunny.

Scary, but also realize: these dots represent all the cases between 1957 and January 2005. Would have liked to see the map broken down by year for better context.

You can break down the cases by year on our interactive map/database — just roll over those gray bars on the left when you get to the link.

This is a map of POPULATION DENSITY. All that it tells you is the trivial fact that regional patterns in Boy Scout abuse cases are not large enough to overwhelm regional population density variations.

It makes more sense as an interactive, where people can zoom in on a place they care about to learn more about individual cases. Still, for an overview it would be much more interesting to show abuse normalized by population or by Boy Scout membership.

Failure to denominate is totally my favorite pet peeve right now.
